THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Thetford Town 0
Hadleigh United 1
Thetford Town suffered a late blow in their relegation fight as Hadleigh United’s Dan Thrower snatched all three points at Mundford Road on Saturday.
Town player-manager Danny White was left disappointed after his side looked destined to pick up a point at home to Hadleigh — until Thrower pounced on some loose defending right at the death.
“We looked strong all game and they didn’t test us that much but we just lacked that bit of quality to take the lead,” said White. “The goal was sloppy and it came about because of a lack of communication.”
White’s side, who play at Ipswich Wanderers tomorrow (3pm), are now one point behind their relegation rivals Swaffham Town with only one home game to play.
“We have some six pointers coming up, especially against Fakenham Town. It’s going to come down to who wants it more and I think that we showed it today but we just needed that bit of luck,” added White.
Town should have taken the lead in the first 10 minutes, but Jamie Buhlemann blasted over from close range.
Hadleigh were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Andrew Cusack brought down Marley Spindler in the box.
White added some pace to his attack just after half-time when he brought on Ollie Standley.
And the change nearly paid off when his driving run set up Shaun Hunsdon, who shot just wide.
Town were causing the Hadleigh defence a lot of problems from Hunsdon’s throw ins with the Hadleigh back four struggling to mark Buhlemann at the front post.
The number 10 had another great chance to open the scoring but his volley from inside the area flew into the side netting.
However, Town could not take their chances and they were left ruing their mistakes when Hadleigh’s Sam Sharp pounced on a loose at the back. The substitute rounded the keeper but his shot was blocked on the line by Bailey. The ball then fell kindly to Thrower who slotted home at the second time of asking.
White’s men had no time to respond with the goal coming late on with Town suffering their third loss on the bounce.
