SUFFOLK SENIOR CUP
Cornard United 1
Haughley United 2
Dom Arnold hailed a special achievement after helping Haughley United book their place in the Suffolk Senior Cup final on Saturday.
With a chance to walk out at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road on offer, Cornard were aiming to live up to their higher-league billing and overcome their Suffolk and Ipswich League opposition.
However, it was not to be for the Thurlow Nunn League side as Haughley responded brilliantly from falling behind to Luke Payne’s opener as goals from Ryan Wragg and Romeul Cordington completed the turnaround to seal their place in the final.
“It’s my first season here and it is a great achievement for everyone at the club,” said Arnold after his man-of-the-match display.
“We came into the game as underdogs but looking at the match, we were the better side and our reward is a trip to Portman Road.
“I think there’s a few Ipswich fans in the dressing room and it is going to be a great day not only for them but everyone at the club.
“It will be a brilliant occasion and we are all just looking forward to it.”
Cornard opened the scoring after 15 minutes as Payne brilliantly curled home a 25-yard free-kick into the top left corner.
However, with some Cornard fans still celebrating, Haughley struck back immediately as Arnold’s pinpoint corner was bundled home by Wragg despite the best efforts of Aaron Robinson on the line.
And in what proved a hard-fought 45 minutes, it was Haughley who grabbed the decisive second after 35 minutes as Wragg released the onrushing Cordington to burst clear and fire past Ben Baldwin, sealing his side’s place in the final.
