Quality counts as Bury boss rebuilds squad
BURY Town manager Richard Wilkins has said he is only interested in quality, not quantity, as the Blues look to rebuild their squad.
Danny Cunningham and Lee Smith have departed the club for Lowestoft Town, while Roscoe Hipperson, Kieran Leabon and Craig Nurse have been released, but no new signings have yet been made.
That is in contrast to all of Bury’s Suffolk rivals in the Ryman League, who have picked up new players ahead of the coming campaign.
“We need to get in at least two or three permanent fixtures who we know are capable of starting,” said the Blues’ boss. “It’s no good getting someone in who is not as good as we have already got.”
A centre-half, a midfielder and a wide player are among those set to join Bury on trial when pre-season begins next month, while boss WIlkins and director of football Trevor Collins continue to speak with targets.
Collins added: “We are not too disappointed we have not got anyone in yet – with the type of player we have been targeting it may take a little longer than usual.
“The supporters need to trust the people behind the scenes because they are working hard to sort things out.
“We should also remember that at the start of last season we didn’t have Connor Hall – who hadn’t broken through yet – Callum Kearns or James Scowcroft – because of injury – and we didn’t sign Billy Clark or John Sands until during the season.”
