Nick Keeble’s Ipswich Town column

The Haverhill Branch of the Ipswich Town Supporters Club will be running a coach (as they always do) to Portman Road on Saturday afternoon for the visit of Millwall.

The mood on that coach will no doubt reflect that of the vast majority of Town fans and that is one of cautious optimism.

An away victory at Bolton is no mean feat and players seem to be finding their feet under the new regime.

Millwall are on some run. They haven’t been beaten since 22 September and are not in a play-off spot only because of goal difference.

Their top scorer is on-loan Chris Wood (who will be up against fellow Kiwi Tommy Smith) while ex-Townie Liam Trotter has six goals for the season.

Manager Kenny Jackett, the longest serving manager in the Championship, has assembled a squad without spending much money, having made good but limited use of the loan market to supplement his established players.

I did have a bit of a nervous laugh the other day when I read that DJ Campbell had revealed his penalty taking secrets and has apparently told the goalkeeping world that all his future penalties will be put to their right!

Now, I always thought for some reason that was the sort of thing that you kept to yourself!

An away tie to Aston Villa is what Ipswich have been dealt in the FA Cup and another possible reunion with Darren Bent.

He is out of favour at the moment and there is talk of him being sold in January.

It is always good to see your team challenge because there is just that chance of a bit of giant killing and Villa aren’t having the best of seasons ... so who knows??

And, if it all goes pear shaped, we can always concentrate on the league.
