Newson back to fire Needham

RYMAN One North’s leading scorer Sam Newson will be back in Needham Market’s starting line-up tomorrow, hoping to re-ignite their promotion bid, writes Russell Claydon.

Twenty-one goal Newson will start his first game for six weeks at Bloomfields against Cheshunt (3pm) with manager Danny Laws declaring there will be ‘no excuses’ for not getting a win.

The Marketmen’s boss — who has changed his goalkeeper and brought in two new strikers in the last 10 days in a bid to halt a slide that has seen Needham’s title hopes diminished — bemoaned the heavy pitch in the 2-2 draw at Soham Town Rangers on Saturday.

But with Laws rating the Bloomfields surface as one of the best around in non-League, he said no allowances will be made for not getting back to winning ways tomorrow.

“There will be no excuses,” he said.

Andrew Plummer has been told to find another club with former Needham goalkeeper Liam Jones returning to play at Soham.

And it comes after Tommy Smith and Lee McGlone have been added to an attack, which already includes sharpshooter Newson and Danny Bloomfield. But Jose Espinosa was another player to have suffered the axe in Laws’ shake-up.

“We have made these changes to get us back on our aim and our aim is to get promoted out of Ryman Division One North,” said Laws. “We are still sitting up there in the league and you see different results every Saturday in this league, like Grays drawing with Waltham Forest on Wednesday night.”

That result sees Needham still sitting in third place but only two points clear of Tilbury in sixth, who have a game in hand.
