DIVISION ONE NORTH
Waltham Forest 3 Needham Market 1
NEEDHAM Market suffered their first defeat of the season, at the hands of Waltham Forest on Saturday.
The Marketmen made three changes from Tuesday’s draw at Heybridge Swifts, with Duane Wright, Darcy D’eath and skipper Rhys Barber replacing Danny Bloomfield, Gavin Johnson and James Evans for the trip to Cricklefield Stadium.
With Needham spluttering to get going, Jeff Hammond slipped through the Needham defence and slid the ball past the advancing Andrew Plummer to put the hosts ahead after 16 minutes.
The match carried on with little quality on show, but Bradley Barber’s 35-yard effort rattled the bar eight minutes before half-time.
However, it was the hosts who took the lead when Joshua Bonnett collected a throw-in and fired home via the bar three minutes before the break.
The hosts got their third goal two minutes after the break when Needham were outnumbered at the back and Sackey’s cross was headed home by an unmarked Manu Dagher at the far post.
With the visitors continuing to struggle, Needham manager Danny Laws sent on Bloomfield and Scott Chaplin for Lewis Pemberton and Deakin Napier and went three at the back in a bid to save the game.
Forest were dealing comfortably with the exertions of the visitors, until the keeper parried Evans’ shot into the path of Chaplin to sidefoot home a consolation with six minutes to play.
