RIDGEONS League Premier Division side Walsham-le-Willows have signed Cambridge United’s record goalscorer and former Mildenhall Town manager John Taylor as assistant to current manager Paul Smith.

Taylor has a wealth of experience having played over 500 league matches for Bristol Rovers, Bradford City and Cambridge United and manager Smith is delighted to renew his partnership with Taylor after playing together at Sudbury Town.

He said: “I’m very pleased John has joined the staff. He is a top coach with all the highest badges and with his wealth of experience he should bring more class to the club which everyone should benefit from. No one more so than the strikers, who he can help massively, we have struggled scoring goals in previous seasons so as a former prolific striker he should be able to help with finishing.”

Walsham were not the only ones to grab the headlines as league rivals Mildenhall Town enjoyed back-to-back victories in pre-season. Firstly they managed to see off Deeping Rangers 3-2 last Saturday, with a brace from returning striker Owen Paynter, which he followed up on Tuesday night with another brace in an emphatic 6-1 demolition of Ipswich Wanderers, Michael Harvey and Andrew Wood matched the forwards efforts by also scoring twice to round of the result.

Ridgeons League First Division’s Thetford Town have also been in action in recent weeks and enjoyed an impressive win against Ryman Division One North side Needham Market last Thursday, with a goal from Matt Howard sealing the victory.

n Thetford were due to host Ridgeons Premier outfit Haverhill Rovers last night, while Walsham-le-Willows and Team Bury kick off their pre-season campaigns this week.
