ALAN BOON RYMAN LEAGUE CUP
Concord Rangers 3
Needham Market 3
(Needham won 3-1 on penalties)
GOALKEEPER Andrew Plummer scored a dramatic headed equaliser and then saved two penalties as Needham Market edged through the second round of the Alan Boon Ryman League Cup against Ryman Premier outfit Concord Rangers.
The Marketmen were trailing 3-1 with just a minute of normal time to play, but Sam Newson pulled a goal back to set the stage for Plummer’s goalscoring heroics.
Although Scott Chaplin rattled the bar with his spot-kick, Newson, Gavin Johnson and Bradley Barber netted their attempts, while Concord’s James Elmes blasted over before Plummer’s two saves.
Chaplin and Rhys Barber replaced Danny Thrower and Gavin Johnson, while Pip Boyland retained the captain’s armband.
Jose Espinosa and Newson went close for Needham, but they suffered the loss of Duane Wright, who was replaced by James Evans because of injury after 28 minutes.
However, the deadlock was broken after 33 minutes when Newson charged down Heyward’s clearance and Espinosa nipped in and colly chipped home.
Their lead lasted just a minute when Tony Stokes was allowed two bites of the cherry to fire home .
Within two minutes of the restart, Harry Elmes headed in Campbell’s cross and the match looked over in the 80th minute when Jean Phillipe-Yamfam went past substitute Gavin Johnson and fired high past Plummer.
However, Bradley Barber, Chaplin and Espinosa combined to set up a last-minute goal for Newson, before late drama saw Plummer level.
With four additional minutes nearly up, a free-kick was cleared to the feet of Espinosa, who delivered the ball back into the area and Plummer planted his header into the net.
The referee had to consult with his assistant before awarding the goal, but it stood and the match went to a shootout that Danny Laws’ men held on to win.
