Bury go Down to move up

TEAM Bury begin their quest to earn themselves a spot in next season’s FA Cup with a trip to Downham Town tomorrow (3pm).

Ross Wilding’s youngsters are currently third-bottom of the Ridgeons League First Division knowing they need to finish in the top 10 to be eligible for the world’s most famous domestic competition in 2012/13.

And there would be no better place to start a run than at 10th-placed Downham.

“Obviously they are a team who are near us down the bottom,” said Wilding. “The lads have trained well and looked sharp — I’m just hoping they can carry that into the game.

“We’d like to make the FA Cup — the players who will be with us next year really want to play in that.”

Following tomorrow’s trip to Downham, Bury visit Halstead Town on Tuesday (7.45pm) as they begin a busy schedule that will see them play 14 league matches between now and the end of the season on April 21, as well as up to three First Division Knockout Cup ties.

“It’s going to be very difficult because some of the lads will be playing for the college and Suffolk as well,” added Wilding. “However, it will provide a good opportunity for some of the first years to have a game.”

Team Bury will be without the services of Ryan Clark for at least the rest of the season after he secured a move to Ridgeons Premier outfit Hadleigh United, where fellow Bury player Jack Cawley also plies his trade temporarily.

n Team Bury’s rescheduled First Division Knockout Cup semi-final at home to Cambridge University Press will take place on Tuesday, March 20.
