BURY Town’s preparations for a promotion assault next season have already begun in earnest and their first new signing could arrive as early as next week.
The Blues will be allowed to speak to out-of-contract players at other clubs from Saturday and have already identified a number of targets they have been tracking for some months.
Meetings were held with every member of Bury’s playing squad last Thursday, and all have been invited back for pre-season training – with four more putting pen to paper on new contracts.
Director of football Trevor Collins said: “Everybody has been invited back for pre-season training and been told they need to come back and prove they are worth a place in the squad.
“There will also be three or four new faces to strengthen the squad and challenge current players for places.”
The latest to sign up for the new campaign are captain Tom Bullard, defenders Mark Coulson and Sam Nunn, as well as striker-turned-winger Kieran Leabon.
They join goalkeeper Marcus Garnham and full-backs Elliot Hunter and Russell Short in signing new deals, while winger Chris Henderson, and brothers Lee and Sam Reed were already under contract for next season.
And while a number of the Blues’ successful squad from last season have signed up once again, there remains the need to bring in new blood, especially with doubts over some players’ plans – including James Scowcroft, who is contemplating whether or not to continue on his pay-as-you-play deal at Ram Meadow for another year.
Collins added: “We have got a number of players on our radar that we have been monitoring over the last 12 months, if not longer, and we will be targeting some from our top bracket as soon as is legally possible.”
n Bury Town are set to announce a date for a friendly against Blue Square Bet Premier side Cambridge United.
There are already fixtures confirmed against npower Football League clubs Ipswich Town (July 20, 7.45pm), of the Championship, and Colchester United (July 23, 3pm), of League One.
