Bury Town continue run to clinch joint top spot
BURY Town’s impressive start to the season continued on Saturday as they went joint top in the Ryman League premier Division with a 1-0 win over Kingstonian at Ram Meadow.
In a tight affair, the hosts finally seized the advantage after the visitors were reduced to 10 men following Byron Napper’s 33rd minute dismissal for a second bookable offence, as Billy Clark headed home 13 minutes into the re-start to clinch all three points.
Meanwhile, Needham Market’s hopes of a prolonged run in the FA Trophy were brought to an end on Saturday following a thrilling 4-3 preliminary round defeat to Maidstone United at Bloomfields.
In the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, Mildenhall Town also went joint top following a comfortable 2-0 home win over CRC.
It was much the same story in the rugby where Bury St Edmunds’ dominance of London One North continues after another emphatic victory, this time beating Romford and Gidea Park 81-0, maintaining their perfect start to the campaign with a third consecutive win.
And finally, Bury St Edmunds CC ended the season in on a high note, following up a general draw at home to Saffron Walden in their final East Anglian Premier league fixture, in which captain Tome Huggins hit an impressive 167, by clinching the Suffolk Twenty20 Cup on Sunday, beating rivals Sudbury in the final at the Victory Ground.
