BURY TOWN got off to a flying start in the Ryman League Premier Division with an impressive 3-1 win away to Horsham on Saturday in the season’s opener.
Town raced into a two-goal lead in the first half, courtesy of Russell Short and Lee Smith, before Roy Essandoh rounded off the scoring on his debut, with nine minutes remaining, to claim all three points.
Needham Market fired a signal of intent to the rest of Ryman One North on Saturday with a thumping 7-0 win against Potters Bar Town at Bloomfields. Striker Sam Newson claimed the match ball in the dominant display, putting four past helpless visiting keeper Ryan Burbridge.
In the Ridgeons League First Division, Team Bury suffered their second defeat of the season, losing 2-0 on their travels to Long Melford.
This year’s FA Cup competition also kicked off with a host of Ridgeons League sides in action.
Walsham-le-Willows overcome First Division side Thetford Town with a 3-1 victory. Charlie Robinson and Paul Musgrove put the hosts in a comfortable position before Thetford clawed one back through Matt Dixon.
However, they were unable to complete the unlikely comeback as Craig Skipp added another for the Willows to confirm their progression through the competition.
Haverhill Rovers joined Walsham in the next round with a convincing 4-1 victory away to Stowmarket Town.
Amazingly, Town took a one goal into half-time after Wayne Proctor struck for the home side, before a second-half collapse which saw Rovers prove their Premier Division pedigree to win 4-1.
Mildenahll Town enjoyed less success however as they were beaten convincingly at home by league rivals Brantham Athletic 4-0.
The Preliminary Round for the competition has been drawn and sees Needham Market face Felixstowe and Walton United and Walsham-le-Willows travel to Ely City. Matches will take place on September 3.
