Football: MONEY SACKED

MICK Money has been sacked as Thetford Town FC manager following just one full season at the helm.

The shock decision was made by the club committee after Money requested a bigger budget ahead of next season.

"I felt that if the club wanted to progress then it was important to start paying players expenses," said 46-year-old Money.

"Thetford is in the Ridgeons League and should give the players – who have to take time off work – a little something.

"I put this to the board and soon after I was contacted by phone and told that I was sacked. Obviously, I was devastated."

After being appointed manager in March 2008, Money ploughed almost 3,000 of his own money into the Mundford Road club, paying for kit and training equipment.

The former Attleborough FC chief had formulated a three-year plan – culminating in promotion to the Ridgeons Premier Division in 2011.

A 16th-place finish in his first full season in charge appeared to do little to save Money's fate.

"I really felt that we were moving forward and that I could bring success to the club.

"I have no hard feelings with Thetford and the club will always be in my heart. I made a lot of friends there and I wish them all the best."

Money was also eager to see the clubhouse refurbished in a bid to make more money.

"The club need an income if they are to move forward and I hope they find it," said Money, whose son Christian plays for the club at centre back.

Secretary Bob Richards said: "The club is declining to comment as to the reasons why Mick Money was sacked. The budget for next season was only one issue.

"The club is hoping that the players Mick has brought in will be loyal and finish what he started last season."

Meanwhile, former Breckland boss Simon Brooks has ruled himself out of applying for the post.

"I would love to manage the club again, but I will not be applying," said Brooks.

"If they want me, they can call me," he added.
