Football: D-day for striker
BURY Town FC expect their new striker to make a decision about whether he has a future with the club today.
Negotiations for a permanent move to Ram Meadow have been progressing since Liam Barrett joined the Blues after being released by Ipswich Town FC.
However, the 18-year-old has delayed making his final decision after being approached by a second, unnamed, club.
Despite the last-minute setback, Town chief Richard Wilkins is optimistic that the talented teenager will pledge his future with the Blues.
"We have spoken at length to him about his future and terms have been agreed," confirmed Wilkins.
"We now have to wait and see. I hope to have his decision today," he added.
Barrett has made three appearances for Town, scoring twice in his only full match – against Arlesey on December 29.
He was included in the starting line-up for Bury's home game against Ryman League Division One North table-toppers Edgware Town on Saturday, but a kneee injury forced an early exit from the closely-contested action (report on page 67).
"In his short time with us, Liam has made an impact and I very much hope he stays," said Wilkins.
If Barrett gives the thumbs up to the Blues, he faces a tough week of action as Town take to the road for two away league games in four days.
Tomorrow, they travel to Ware before visiting Northwood on Tuesday.
Although Town defeated their first opponents 5-1 at Ram Meadow in September, Wilkins has warned that he does not expect that sort of scoreline to be repeated.
"They were without a regular goalkeeper and we took full advantage.
"That said, I thought they were one of the best teams we have met so far this season and I expect a tough game," said Wilkins.
The Town chief has a fully-fit squad to select from, with Scott Chaplin likely to make his final contribution before returning to college studies in Stafford.
"We need to take the positives from our game against the league leaders – a clean sheet and a deserved point – to make sure we get something from the next two games," said Wilkins.
