Football: Charlton in charge

SIMON Charlton has admitted he may have to seek managerial advice from Blackburn Rovers chief Sam Allardyce after the former Premier League star was appointed team manager at Mildenhall Town FC this week.

The former Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers and Norwich City full-back played under a host of top managers during his playing days, including Big Sam at Wanderers and Alan Ball at Southampton.

Despite this being the 37-year-old's first managerial job, the former Norwich City Academy coach believes his time at Carrow Road will only benifit his new club (writes Mark Williams).

"I feel this is a great opportunity for me and I aim to take Mildenhall Town Football Club forward," said Charlton, who lives in Attleborough.

"This is my first job as a boss and no doubt I will have to ring Big Sam at some point to ask for advice.

"However, I am experienced in the game and I hope to bring some focus and direction to the club."

Hall travel to high-flying Dereham Town tomorrow for a Ridgeons League Premier Division fixture (ko 3pm), before Charlton takes over for the game at Ely City on Bank Holiday Monday (ko 3pm).

Charlton's first task is to reverse the club's poor run of form which has seen them lose seven straight games.

"I have seen the team play a couple of times already and I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw," said Charlton, who said he spotted the vacancy while browsing online.

"I believe there are some good players here that I will look to keep as we build for next season.

"During my interview it was evident that the board liked me and I certainly liked them.

"The club clearly has ambition with a new stadium around the corner and I want to be a part of that," he added.

Mildenhall suffered their seventh consecutive defeat on Tuesday following a 3-2 home reverse against Stanway Rovers.
