Football: Bury Town goalkeeper Dean Greygoose retires
VETERAN Bury Town goalkeeper Dean Greygoose has decided to hang up his gloves after 27 years in the game.
The 44-year-old shot-stopper (pictured), who joined the Blues in 2006, will remain at Ram Meadow as goalkeeping coach and will combine this with a joint-manager role for Ridgeons League side Team Bury alongside Neil Reader.
Speaking to the Bury Free Press this week, Greygoose said: "I just felt that enough was enough. I have loved my time as a player at Bury, but after suffering from a long knee injury last season I just felt the time was right to start my management career."
Greygoose added that he had been offered deals from other clubs but that he had always been keen to stay at Ram Meadow.
Bury Town director of football Trevor Collins said, "We knew this day would come sooner rather than later and therefore we spoke to Dean more than a year ago regarding the possibilty of retaining his services somewhere at the club and we are delighted that he will remain here in a goalkeeping coaching capacity. This will be a major boost for us."
Born in Thetford, Greygoose enjoyed an impressive football league career. After making his break at Cambridge United, Greygoose went on to have spells at Leyton Orient, Crystal Palace, Crewe Alexandra and Stevenage Borough.
The custodian made 87 appearances for arch rivals AFC Sudbury, before joining Bury from Soham Town Rangers three years ago.
Town continued their pre-season with a fine 6-1 victory at Ely City on Tuesday. Young striker Craig Nurse claimed a hat-trick, Sam Reed scored twice and centre-back Roscoe Hipperson was on target.
Team Bury drew 1-1 against AFC Sudbury Reserves - Anthony Bannister giving the hosts the lead.
