Football: Blues' battle is on to be No 1 spot

BURY Town FC have announced their first new signing of the closed season this week.

Goalkeeper Marcus Garnham joins the Blues from Woodbridge Town, where he was voted both players' player of the year and supporters' player of the year at the end of last season.

The talented 20-year-old has signed a two-year contract with his new Ram Meadow-based club and is eager to take up the challenges presented by the British Gas Southern League Midlands Division next season.

"He is an ambitious young player and we are delighted that Marcus has decided to join," said Trevor Collins, Bury Town's director of football.

Collins explained that the youngster would be working alongside Bury Town's present custodian, Dean Greygoose and the duo will compete for the green jersey.

"Marcus is eager to work alongside Dean and vice-versa," said Collins.

" We are looking to the future and there is room in the club for two top-class goalkeepers," he added.

Last season, Garnham's impressive form caught the notice of Ipswich Town FC and he was called up to play for the Portman Road Reserves.

Meanwhile, the 43-year-old former Crewe Alexandra and Crystal Palace keeper will be key in coaching in the club as well as expand his own coaching network.

"We are hoping that Dean will always have a part to play. No club would be wanting to lose his experience," said Collins.

Blues' team manager Richard Wilkins confirmed this week that former player Richard Skelly had left the club to join Mildenhall Town as first team coach at Recreation Way.

Last season, the former midfielder, assisted with the running of Bury Town U-18s.

Needham Market FC manager Danny Laws has signed a new three-year deal at Bloomfields.

After being appointed team chief two years ago, Laws has guided the Reds to three trophies and a second-place finish in the Ridgeons League Premier Division – the club's highest ever league finish.

"I am fully committed to Needham Market because everyone at the club is hungry for success," said Laws.
