The first of this year’s St Edmundsbury Sports Awards sponsors have been announced as the countdown to the ceremony continues.

The seven businesses and organisations in the borough will help to ensure the success of the awards continues.

Bury Free Press and Haverhill Echo, West Suffolk College, Havebury, Unsion West Suffolk branch, Baker Tilly, Simply PR and Sodexo will be sponsoring awards at the event, which will be held at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Friday, September 27.

Michelle Banfield-Curran, Abbeycroft Leisure’s partnership manager, said: “The awards would not be able to continue without the generous support of all our sponsors.

“The awards exist to ensure that we continue to recognise the talents of sports people in the borough and provide them with much-needed recognition and publicity.”

The awards are run every year by Abbeycroft Leisure, which manages Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill Leisure Centres as well as Thurston Sport Education Centre.

They recognise outstanding sporting achievements made by sportsmen, women and juniors throughout the year and to celebrate the huge amount of work that takes place within sport in the borough of St Edmundsbury.

One of the recipients in 2011 was Haverhill Running Club.

Trevor Bunch said: “After winning Club of the Year there was an enhanced feeling of self-belief and pride within the club.

“This feel-good feeling led to an increased number of club members volunteering for roles such as coaching, administration and event organising.

“In the two years since winning the award, the club has changed beyond recognition and has more than doubled in size.”

There are 11 categories to enter this year: Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Unsung Hero, Lifetime Achievement, Triumph Over Adversity, Coach of the Year, Young Community Volunteer of the Year, Club of the Year, Senior Team of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, and the People’s Choice Award, voted for by the public.
