West Suffolk College 45 Easton College 19
BURY St Edmunds Rugby Club, West Suffolk College, got their league campaign off to a winning start, beating Easton College 45-19.
The visitors won a scrum against the head after just eight minutes, and broke down the blind to score the first points through a converted try.
A catch and drive from a lineout saw Sam Bixby score a well-deserved try, Matt Briggs added the two extra points.
Easton had another try when three missed tackles in midfield opened a gaping hole but Tom Howlett then crossed the line for Bury, with Matt Briggs converted to bring the half time score to 14-14.
The second half found the home team fired up and Jasper Spencer and Rob Duchesne both crossed the line for converted tries before Josh Holingworth used his speed to get his first try for the college.
A scrum was then awarded and a set move from the base found Jackson coming in off his wing to score a well-deserved try. West Suffolk College’s final try has to be a contender for try of the season with Williams adding the finishing touch to a superb move before adding the kick himself.
Not to be outdone, the final points were awarded to Easton when the fly half intercepted and, despite a valiant chase down by Ricky Jones, stretched to score in the corner, brought the final scoreline to 45-19.
Next week the College are on the road to St Joseph’s, in Ipswich, for a first round Daily Mail Cup game.
