Sawston 15

After starting the new season with successive hefty defeats, Mildenhall & Red Lodge Eagles have secured back-to-back victories following a triumph over Sawston.

Despite the eventual scoreline, it was the visitors that started the brighter of the two sides and it was no surprise when they scored the game’s first try in the 10th minute.

However, the Eagles responded positively and reduced the arrears to 8-7 before the break when Caroline Jones went over for a try that would subsequently be converted by Jamie Grayson.

Early in the second half the hosts went 14-8 in front when Kevin Jay Cannon made the most of his penalty try opportunity.

Yet, with the encounter now flowing from one end to the other, Sawston were soon back in front with another try.

Eventually, though, Mildenhall & Red Lodge ran in two further tries to open up an advantage that they did not surrender before the final whistle to follow up the previous week’s win over Ely.

The victory moved the Eagles on to 10 points for the season and up to fourth position in the table, just five points adrift of early league leaders Cottenham Renegades.

They are without a fixture for the next two weekends, before returning to action on October 22, when Cambridge Adventurers will be the visitors at Red Lodge.

The Adventurers are currently in second spot with the same points return as Cottenham.
