Cycling: King James is a record breaker

James Ward scorched his way to a record time in CC Sudbury's annual hill climb at Semer on Sunday, the Cambridgeshire CC rider cutting more than two seconds off a time that had stood for nine years.

Ward won the event for the first time in 46.4 seconds, a tremendous improvement on Jonathan Lee's record of 48.8, set by the CC Breckland rider in 1996.

A doctor of engineering, Ward has ridden the course before.

"I knew the line to take," he said, "and everything went to plan."

Adrian Pettitt (Stowmarket and District), who won the event last year, was second in 49.1, which also gave him the East District Championship.

Tim Snook (Ipswich BC) was third in 49.9, with Mark Jay the first Sudbury rider home in 50.4 to take fourth place.

The hill climb attracted an entry of 37, with only two riders not making the start, the best field for some years, with the host club having no fewer than 11 starters.
