Third time lucky in battle to beat the wet weather

CRICKETERS in the area will be crossing their fingers to make it third time lucky as they look to finally beat the weather this weekend.
With the cricket season warm-up games going ahead amid drought conditions with hose pipe bans, the rain has barely relented since, meaning last Saturday and Sunday saw a second successive wash-out for most of the area’s sides.
Despite being one of only two games to be completed in the East Anglian Premier League after two weeks, Bury St Edmunds are currently anchored to the bottom of the table after their batting collapse against Copdock and Old Ipswichian on the opening weekend of the season.
Their scheduled match at Swardeston on Saturday joined the rest of the league’s programme in falling victim to the weather while tomorrow’s home game against Clacton (11am) looks more promising after a change in the forecast on Wednesday.
Captain Tom Huggins said: “It is just a bit disheartening and gets you down a bit after all the winter training we’ve put in.
“We were looking forward to playing, especially after the first week when we did not perform like we should have done.
“But we had a strong side for Saturday and we have a strong side for this Saturday at home to Clacton where we are looking to start our winning ways.”
He added: “We are looking forward to it and hopefully we will get some form of a game in, but the weather holds the final say.
“It is disappointing, it is the worst start to a season I can remember.”
In the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship, all of the matches were cancelled across the board.
In Division One, Lakenheath finally hope to get going again at home to Exning, while Mildenhall are due to travel to Mistley to complete their first match and Woolpit travel to Wivenhoe (all 1pm).
Meanwhile, Suffolk’s Minor Counties Championship MCCA KO Trophy Group Two match at Norfolk’s Manor Park was also cancelled.
Bury player Justin Bishop, who is captaining the county side this season, had picked Huggins alongside Simon Rees in his side.
Suffolk will try again to get their cup campaign under way at Ipswich School on Sunday where they are scheduled to play Wiltshire (11am), hoping the clouds do not unload again on a day expected to be more reminiscent of autumn than spring.
