Tasty clash as rivals get ready for a spicy derby
DERBY DATE: Justin Bishop
BURY St Edmunds’ vice-captain Justin Bishop is relishing the prospect of facing rivals Sudbury tomorrow (11am) as the club aim to claim their first victory of the East Anglian Premier League.
Bury were forced to settle for a general draw on Saturday at home to Vauxhall Mallards, who were put into bat and set a total of 206.
The home side had a big ask off their 54 overs, but a superb score of 72 from Bishop and a steady 42 from Simon Rees helped Bury on their way to a score of 183 as the game looked set to reach an exciting climax.
However, they were unable to add the required final 24 runs to win as they settled for a share of the spoils.
Bishop was pleased with the way his side hung on for 10 league points, but has target victory tomorrow against their Suffolk compatriots in a game he expects to be a highly-competitive affair.
He said: “After last week’s defeat, you would have to say it was a good draw against a very strong side who have won the league a number of times.
“We were disappointed to fall just short of claiming the win.
“But we kept attacking until the end and there were a lot of positives to take from the game.
“On a personal note, I was pleased with my contribution and it was always nice to spend some time in the middle and find a bit of form.
“However, it was a team performance, from the lads bowling to restrict them, to the guys at the end of the batting order who kept things tight and saw us through, everyone contributed, which is pleasing.
“The Sudbury match is one we can look forwrad to because it is a local derby, which gives it a bit of extra spice – we are definitely going out to win the match and I can’t see any reason why we can’t do that.
“There will be a lot of young players involved on both sides and it will certainly be a competitive match.”
