Division title is Woolpit’s to lose

A HUGE weekend lies in store for Woolpit and Mildenhall, with the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship and Suffolk Twenty20 Cup at stake.

Woolpit are in charge ahead of tomorrow’s final round of Two Counties Division One matches (all 12.30pm) and a victory at Lakenheath will secure the title, with Mildenhall hoping to capitalise on any slip-up when they visit Frinton.

Twenty-four hours later, they will be joined by Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury at the Victory Ground in Bury to contest the Suffolk Cup with semi-finals beginning at 10.30am and the final and third-place play-off at 2.15pm.

Woolpit’s South African-born Italian international Andy Northcote said: “We are playing Lakenheath and should win, but actually winning is a different thing – we have to try and do what we have done all year.

“I’d like to think we could sneak the double, but Bury are by far the Ppremier side in the county.”

Steve Lankester, skipper of defending Suffolk Cup champions Mildenhall, added: “We’ll fight for the Two Counties title to the end and we’ll definitely be trying to win the Suffolk Cup again.

“We’ve consistently got big scores this year so we will be competitive.”

Bury begin the day as favourites, and will be looking to regain the title they last won in 2010.

“In terms of league positions we are the favourites, but all four teams are going to be very strong,” said Huggins.

“There are not many opportunities to see Twenty20 cricket in this county, and it’s not only good to watch, but good to play in as well.”

In addition, spectators can purchase Greene King IPA at £1.50 per pint and anyone catching a six having crossed the boundary will qualify for a free pint.
