BURY St Edmunds’ captain Tom Huggins has challenged his side to bounce back to winning ways and prove their worth with victory over league leaders Swardeston tomorrow (11am).
The Victory Ground outfit had their two-match winning streak in the East Anglian Premier League brought to an end on Saturday following a disappointing 91-run defeat away at Copdock and Old Ipswichians.
A poor batting display was the main contributing factor to their loss, falling some way short of the host’s target of 223-6 with only Simon Rees surpassing the 20 run mark, top scoring with 43.
Bury now face a daunting visit from table toppers Swardeston but Huggins has backed his squad to turn the form guide on its head and secure an unlikely victory.
“The defeat was extremely disappointing because we know we were more than capable of getting a victory,” he said. “Some areas of our play were okay but the essentials were just not right and we are all to blame for that.
“We didn’t ourselves in justice and we all know we didn’t perform to our full capability.
“It is frustrating but I still believe we are capable of beating anyone on our day and we need to prove that against Swardeston.
“They are a strong side but we a more than capable of beating them and we are very confident of doing so.
“We need to show that we are still capable of challenging in this division and victory tomorrow will do just that.”
Meanwhile, Suffolk were forced to endure another weather affected encounter in the Minor Cricket Counties Association Eastern Division, settling for a draw away at Hertfordshire.
Suffolk won the toss and decided to field but the torrential rain that fell on the Long Marston surface put a stop to any action taking place over the first two days.
When play did resume the teams agreed to a limited innings match with Suffolk agreeing to chase a set target of 330-7.
However, they were unable surpass the hosts total, reaching 185-8 before the close of play, leaving Huggins frustrated in the knowledge that draws at this stage of the season are not be enough for Suffolk to achieve their aim of challenging for league honours.
“It is highly frustrating that the weather continues to affect our league matches,” he said. “We are at the stage of the season where drawn matches won’t win you the division because you need to be able to build on a run of victories.
“However, we are still in the hunt and there are still plenty of positives to take from our performances which we can take forward with us for the remainder of the season.”
