Convincing victory to progress in Grays Cup
Risbygate Tennis Club's Men's I progressed to the next round of the Grays Cup after a convincing away win against the Victory Club.
For Risbygate, Graham Coult and Sam Radcliffe were on fine form, winning all four sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.
Second pair Mike Ellis and Mark Peters, were almost as successful, taking Victory's seconds 6-3, 6-3 and halving with their senior pair 4-6, 7-5.
The final score was a 7-1 win for Risbygate.
On the same night, Ladies' I travelled to Huntingdon for a Cambridge League match, and were even more successful. They won all eight sets, although some of these were very close. Genella Doble and Julie Hatton had to fight hard before winning 7-5, 6-3 against Huntingdon's first pair and 7-6, 6-4 against their seconds.
Risbygate's other pair, Sue Glasswell and Jo Beresford, had equivalent scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6, 6-3.
The club's Norfolk & Suffolk League team, in their second match of the season, enjoyed a closely-fought contest away to Stoke-by-Clare which ended in a 4-4 draw.
Nick Porter and Ian Christelow won three out of four sets (1-6, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-3) and Geoff Johnson and Andrew Willis one set (6-7,4-6 and 6-2, 2-6).
Geoff and Andrew were unfortunate to lose their first-set tie break as it turned out to be crucial to the overall result, particularly as they had led 5-2. However, Stoke did well to fight back from this position, eventually taking it to 12-10 to leave both teams with a valuable league point.
