Cockfield reign despite downpour

NETBALL players and supporters alike braved torrential rain to ensure an annual tournament continued to be a great success.

The summer competition, organised by West Suffolk Netball, saw 14 teams take part in two sessions on Sunday, with Cockfield crowned the winners.

The tournament raised money for St Nicholas Hospice Care, and organisers said they were pleased with how the day went.

Tracey Butcher, committee secretary of West Suffolk Netball, said: “The competition went very well and was well supported by spectators.

“Even though there were some downpours, the players carried on and it was played in good spirits.

“The committee decided that this year’s event should raise some money for charity.

“We think that we have raised about 200 for St Nicholas Hospice Care, which is really great.”

The tournament was split between two sessions – morning and afternoon – and was contested by teams from across the west of the county and surrounding areas.

Cockfield were overall winners, beating off the challenge of Moreton A, RMG (Ixworth), Moreton B and Jets A (Bury).

Diss-based Pink Ladies won section two and Jubilee, from Bury St Edmunds, topped the third section.

Tracey added: “There is a good standard of netball across West Suffolk and we have just finished our summer league with six divisions and six teams in each. This shows there is certainly a lot of interest in the sport.”

Sue Long, a community fundraiser at the hospice, said: “We are delighted that West Suffolk Netball chose the Hospice as its designated charity for the tournament.

“The event seemed to have been a great success and we would like to thank everyone who helped raise money for the hospice.”
