Class victories for Sizer

WITH the travellers removed, Green Belt MC and Wickford AC, were able to run their autocross meeting at Braintree, but were rewarded with an entry below 30 competitors.

The two-day event was run in dry conditions - with two local competitors in action - on the Saturday, but only one in the wet during Sunday (writes Arthur Debenham).

Steve Sizer is still dependant on his elderly Ford Fiesta but this rewarded the Lakenheath farmer well, with a class victory on both days.

Carl Stebbings also secured a class win on the Saturday, but the engine in the Vauxhall Astra failed him at the Sunday meeting.

Staying with autocross, I was sorry to hear of the recent death of Norman Bradshaw.

A member of Peterborough MC, Norman was well-known locally, as he was a regular competitor at West Suffolk MC meetings, driving his Bradbuilt Special.

AUTOGRASS. In contrast to the autocross meeting, more than 100 competitors took in the first round of the Eastern Open Autograss Challenge, held at St Neots.

Bury’s Matt Ellis was among them, driving his Class A Citroen AX.

The first heat saw Matt secure a fourth, having been up to third at one point. Heat two brought better fortunes, a second-place finish being obtained.

These classified Matt for the A final, a race that needed a restart following a red-flag situation, which saw two drivers excluded from the re-run.

The race was destined to see the local driver notch up his best result to date, bringing the car home in third position.

MOTOR RACING. Away from all the controversy surrounding Formula One, the 750MC were busy with a two-day meeting at Brands Hatch. Local interest centred around the RGB Championship and the cars of John Cutmore and Paul Rogers.

Rogers was at the wheel of the Contour, built and owned by Bury’s David Dawson, while Cutmore continues with the Spire GTR built by Paul Nightingale. Both had a good result to report.

The field was smaller than usual and, when 18 cars left the line, Cutmore did so from second position, Rogers from third. As the race progressed, on a track slippery from oil left during a previous race, positions were reversed. Rogers came home second, behind former champion, Derek Jones, but third for Cutmore saw the Troston driver win his class and establish yet another lap record for his category.

The RGB now takes a break until August. Dawson plans an aerodynamic upgrade for the Contour, but both his and Cutmore’s cars will be seen on the Angel Hill, on July 26.

RALLYING. The Mid Wales Stages Rally took place on Sunday, a round of the Historic British Championship, which used some of the classic forestry special stages such as Sweet Lamb etc.

Matt Fowle and Rob Cook went into the event as one of the favourites for victory in the Historic section, their Ford Escort Mexico facing strong opposition from the similar car of Vincent Bristow.

On the fourth of the six special stages, Bristow went out with an overheating engine.

This eased the situation for the local crew as they went on to secure victory in class C2, together with 10th overall.
