Bury St Edmunds 1st XV 13
BURY travelled to Essex hoping to continue the previous week s winning form in this London 3NE match.
However, with another new-look side taking the field, this did not prove to be the case and Bury suffered a further league defeat.
Bury started strongly and tried to press home their advantage but, due to some poor passing at crucial times, things did not go according to plan. Following a lapse in concentration, Romford romped in to score a try and open their tally.
Two further penalties for the home side meant that, once again, Bury were behind in the first half. Frustration began to set in and the visitors found themselves without their skipper Anthony Mills for 10 minutes and, during this period, Romford scored a try.
During the second half, the power of the Bury pack showed as they shunted the Romford side up the hill in the scrum. However, yet again, they were unable to press home the advantage and score the try they deserved.
Oliver Porter reduced the deficit with two well-struck penalties but, although Romford had their winger sent-off for continued foul play, Bury were unable to press home the advantage.
In the final few minutes, Jamie Johnson scored under the posts but it was too little, too late as Romford ran the clock down for a victory that takes them to fourth place in the league.
Bury 3rd XV 25, Brightlingsea 3rd XV 13
This was a very hard-fought match as two evenly-matched packs fought for control. However, once the ball reached the backs, Bury had the upper hand.
Some heavy tackling throughout took its toll on both sets of forwards. Bury took control in the first half and looked as if they were going to complete an easy victory.
However, a strong, experienced Brightlingsea side had not read the script and pushed Bury very hard right to the end.
Bury were able to field a lot of fresh legs in the second half which made the difference.
Bury s tryscorers were Tom True, Steve Newman, Chris Curtis and Sam True. Sam Norfolk claimed a penalty and conversion.
Bury Vets 7,
Thurston Vets 10
This derby match under floodlights lived up to all expectations as Thurston toiled hard in the face of a strong wind and heavier Bury pack.
Bury launched deep kicks to gain territorial advantage but time and again Thurston worked it up the middle.
Urged on by lion-hearted Chris Rogers at No. 8, the pack produced slick, short passes, James Edgar and Paul Petit showing how it s done.
The Bury pack worked hard but Tony Allen, at scrum-half, finally released winger Justin Rainford for an electrifying run from fully 40 yards out. Stung into action the home side made enough ground from a series of short penalties and well-worked line-outs to force a touch down, duly converted to make it 7-5 at the turn.
From a scrum the ball was shipped to Allen whose long pass was gathered at arm s length, wrong-footing the defence and leaving full-back and captain Mark Bleay to sprint in from 30 yards. The try was again unconverted.
Seeing the match slip away, Bury s pack began to turn the screw but repeatedly they were held up just short of the line by the tireless Collin Mason, with the ever-busy Stu Bell and fresh legs of Gerry Kendall ably supporting.
With Mac McNammarra and Bob Robson giving some relief with the boot and the sure tackling of Tim Peachey and Declan Gallagher out wide, the visitors defence held.
