Tennis: Risbygate men win with ease
RISBYGATE started the week well, the ladies and men's Norfolk & Suffolk League teams both playing Burwell on the same evening.
The men, enjoying home advantage, found the visitors' weakened team to their liking and the strong line-up of Sam Ratcliffe, Nick Taylor, Geoff Johnson and club skipper Andrew Willis comfortably won the match, 8-0.
The ladies had no such luxury in their away match, finding the opposition anything but a pushover.
Dorothy Donaldson and Genella Doble more than held their own, beating Burwell's firsts 6-1, 6-2 and halving with their seconds 3-6, 6-3.
However, Fiona Jacobs and Aimee Evans struggled in both rounds, and failed to take any points.
A 5-3 result in Burwell's favour saw honours even between the two clubs on the night with a win each.
In the Cambridge League, Risbygate Mixed entertained Cambridge and were 3-1 ahead at the half-way stage thanks to a solid 6-4, 6-4 rubber by Louis.
They were well supported by second pair Dorothy Donaldson and Geoff Johnson, who did well to take their second set 7-5 after losing the first 2-6.
An even second round in which Louise and Sam stormed home 6-0, 6-1 and Dorothy and Geoff lost two extremely close sets 3-6, 4-6 left the match score at Risbygate 5, Cambridge 3.
The Norfolk & Suffolk Mixed team finished off the week with an emphatic home win against Soham.
Both Risbygate pairs won all four sets comfortably, Salome Smit and Andrew Willis with scores of 6-0, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 and Jo Harpur and Steve Bishop, even more impressive, with their 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 figures. Two points from the 8-0 win.
Risbygate Ladies progressed in the Grays Cup.
However, it was in a rather farcical way, reaching the semi-final without hitting a ball.
In the first round, Cocks & Hens failed to show up and, this time, St Neots handed Risbygate the match as they were unable to field a team for any of the three dates offered to them.
