Swimming: Record-breaker Walsh in top form
THE 2008 East Region Inter-County Gala was held in Hatfield, Hertfordshire recently.
Luke Walsh (14), from Thetford Dolphins Swimming Club, represented Norfolk in the county competition.
The annual event brings together the best swimmers from around the east region including, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.
Luke swam superbly in the 100m freestyle race in a time of 57.90. While good enough for third place, the time set a new age group club record.
Luke also finished in third spot in the 100m breaststroke (1.15.63). In the 4x100m medley relay, Luke completed the breaststroke leg in 1.15.91.
In his final race –the 4x100m free – Luke swam the final leg in 58.07.
Four Thetford Dolphin Swimming Club members competed at the Ipswich Summer Sprints Open Meet. Walsh continued to impress after taking the Top Boy accolade in his age group after smashing four age group club records.
He won the 50m fly, breaking the record in 28.97. The second record was broken in the 50m free, where Luke finished third with a time of 26.71.
This entitled Luke to enter the men's open age skins race, where the top eight swimmers at the meet swim off against each other.
Luke, who entered in eighth place, finished sixth, gaining another club record time of 26.56 and winning a cash prize.
The quadruple was secured in the 100m free when he finished second in a time of 58.11.
There were further wins for Luke in 50m and 100m breast, before he claimed second in 100m fly, third in 100m back and fifth in 50m back.
Ben Kleinau, 13, smashed the age group club record when he finished second in 50m breast in 34.10.
Ben went on to finish third in 100m breast as well as sixth in 50m fly.
New personal best times were also achieved by Ben in 50m free and 100m fly.
Luke Collins, 10, finished in sixth in 100m individual medley as well as gaining a new personal best time.
The youngster also had top 10 finishes in the 50m free, 50m back, 50m breast and 100m freestyle.
Collins also gained new times for the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke.
Meanwhile, Connor Walsh (13) achieved five new personal best times in the 50m free, 50m breast, 100m free, 100m fly and 100m IM.
