SKIMMERS continue to dominate leading weights at open matches on Hinderclay's Spring Lake (writes CHRIS BOUGHTON).
In the latest match, Wayne Wright took 58lb 7oz, including a few tench for first place, followed by Tony Brooks with 53lb 10oz of skimmers and crucians.

Most of John Ody’s third-place weight of 42lb 12oz was made up of just two carp, of 20lb 6oz
and 18lb, remarkably both landed on the pole.

Last Saturday’s open match on New Lake was an all-carp affair, with Nigel Stannard leading the way with 64lb 6oz of feeder-caught fish from peg three. In second place was Carl Chamberlain, with 57lb 3oz from peg one.

Third was Jack Hobbs with 50lb 7oz from peg 17.

The 100lbs barrier is rarely broken at Hockwold’s Cross Drove, and when it is, it takes an exceptional performance from a brilliant angler. Fishing from peg 54, Mark Pollard won the midweek open match last week with 102lb of skimmers, F1s and brown goldfish. Mark fished long pole tight to the island, feeding pellet and corn and sweetcorn on the hook.

In second place from peg 16, John Chalk also had an excellent weight of 77lb 5ozs.

Normally, this would have been enough to win most matches at Cross Drove. John fished long pole with paste and fed 2mm hard feed pellets and caught big carp up to 16lbs.

In third place was Tony Anderson, who finished with a weight of 51lbs 8ozs of carp, F1s and skimmers.

The Heron Angling Club fished the fourth match in their annual series for the Mike Brown Shield, also at Cross Drove fishery, on Saturday afternoon. The leading weights were nowhere near as spectacular as midweek at the venue but this match was fished on a different area of the fishery.

Darren Lenzini fished long pole to the island on peg 20 using sweetcorn for 35lb 12oz that included an 8lb carp taken in the last half hour of the match, to add to his net of F1s.

In second place, James Boughton caught most of his 31lb 10oz catch in the last two hours of the match on long pole and paste, down the edge, and Steve Jerrold took third spot from peg 40 on pellet, fishing long pole to the island, to land 23lb 14oz of mostly carp.

Rougham Lake will host the annual Eric Bolton Memorial charity fishing match on July 18, in aid of The Parkinsons Disease Society. For further details or to book a place, telephone Helen on 07933 682955.
