MILDENHALL Speedway Stadium has changed hands following a £2 million deal this week – ending an era for long term owners, the Waters family.
New owner Dave Coventry, who finalised the purchase of the 20-acre site on Monday, has targetted improvements to the West Row-based stadium.

The 54-year-old, who runs Romford-based RDC Promotions, has been a stock car promoter at Mildenhall since 1993 and is expected to improve ground security, toilets, greyhound equipment and catering facilities.

He has also said that the future of speedway and greyhound action at the stadium is guaranteed.

"I am extremely excited by this purchase and I have bright plans for the venue," said Coventry, who sealed the deal with James Waters to take over the property.

"I cannot guarantee major improvements in the short term and there is no time-scale as such," he added.

The new ownership marks the end of Mildenhall Speedway's partnership with the Waters' family, who have owned the stadium since speedway first started there in 1975.

Terry Waters was key in the building of Mildenhall Stadium and, together with Bernie Klatt and Colin Barber, brought league speedway to West Row for the first time.

Following 29 years of ownership, the West Row farmer sold the arena and surrounding land to his son James in 2004.

Soon after, he leased the property to commercial director and Mildenhall Fen Tigers' supporter Carl Harris, who resigned in January, giving control back to James Waters.

"It is certainly the end of an era as far as the family ownership goes," said Terry Waters.

"I just hope that the new owner has the determination to succeed. We wish him and the club all the best."

James will continue to have a financial interest in the stadium for the next 18 months and will be involved with promoting greyhound racing.

Club promoter Simon Barton (pictured) said, "I have worked closely with Dave for the past two years and I know he would like to see the Fen Tigers be successful."

Mildenhall Fen Tigers have snapped up Boston rider Matt Wright in a bid to resurrect their stumbling season.

Wright has joined the West Row-based club after German Henning Loof was released on Monday.

The Fenmen face a do-or-die meeting when they entertain Glasgow in a bottom of the table Premier League clash at West Row on Sunday (start 4.30pm).

The Barmy Army are hoping for better fortunes after losing to Scunthorpe twice at the weekend – 48-42 in Yorkshire on Friday and 53-40 at West Row on Sunday.
