Golf by Bryan Potter: Pawsey narrowly misses out on a 59
ANDREW Pawsey came within a shot of achieving that elusive net 59 in the Bury St Edmunds men's qualifying round for the Fullers EGU Gold Medal on Saturday.
He had the advantage of a 24 handicap in producing a net 60 on the way to topping Division Three, and earning himself a place in the final at Woodhall Spa in August.
"He has a swing like a single-figure player and has been threatening for years but usually scores like a 24 handicapper," said club professional Mark Jillings.
Pawsey's remarkable round was the feature of a competition that attracted a field of 122.
Steve Beahan moved into single figures after winning Division One, with a net 69 from 10. He had to beat off Nick Brewster (6) and Andrew Grogan (9) on countback. Brewster's 75 was the lowest gross score and moved him into category one status.
Another check on the back nine decided Division Two, with James Thomas getting the verdict over junior Jonathan Last after both had returned 68 from 15.
Bury's Sue Anderson is off the mark after winning her first-round match at Halesworth in the National Championship for club handicap champions. Her target is a place in the final at The Belfry next April.
The club's mixed competition for the Hallders Trophy was abandoned after a male member became ill on the course and was taken to hospital.
A couple of net 64s were the best returns in Stowmarket men's May Medal on Sunday. They were produced by Neil Hammond (off 14) and Jason Cantwell (10), the former taking the top Division One prize on countback.
Jason Johnson turned in the best card in Saturday's session, his net 68 from 13 topping Division One.
