BURY St Edmunds Golf Club, prompted by an initiative by the English Women's Golf Association, is making a significant effort to encourage more female members.

Although the club has a full male membership, fewer women seem to be interested locally.

So, club professional Mark Jillings and his staff will endeavour to attract new females by hosting a day of free coaching on May 14. There will also be a special ongoing coaching offer to those attending.

The professionals will be available for three sessions at 10.30am, 2.30pm and 6pm, when anyone interested will receive an introduction to the game, instruction and refreshments.

And, you don't need equipment, it will be provided.

A place can be booked by calling the professionals shop on 01284 755978

Helen O'Connell will not easily forget Saturday, April 26, 2008. It was the day she produced an outstanding round of golf, scoring 44 points in the Bury St Edmunds women's April Stableford.
It was also a qualifying round for the Queen Mother Cup. Her performance, which included 26 points on her front nine, has been rewarded with a place in the regional final at Benton Hall on August 29.

Bury's Barbara Simm was also in good form at the weekend. Five successive three-point holes from the 12th helped her to a winning 43 points in the Juby Cup.
Spare a thought for Alison Bass – she has to settle for second on 43 points after failing to score at the final hole.

Suffolk Golf & Country Club men's team will be keen to get started in their home Stenson Shield second round home match against Fynn Valley tomorrow.
The Fornham St Genevieve-based club are still smarting after going down by just six holes in a brave Hambro Cup fight at the Valley two weeks ago.
Stowmarket will be at Halesworth.
