Football: Title showdown
Needham Market FC go into the final game of the Ridgeons League season with a tantalising treble still within their grasp – but only just.
It took a last-gasp equaliser from substitute Glenn Snell to claim a vital point away at Dereham Town on Tuesday.
A 2-2 draw was enough to set up an eagerly-anticipated final day showdown against league leaders Soham Town Rangers at Julius Martin Lane tomorrow (ko 3pm).
This will be the 12th game in five weeks for the Reds and they will complete their campaign two days later when they meet Gorleston in a League Cup final to be held at Diss Town on Monday (ko 3pm).
Needham team manager Danny Laws admits that although there are a few tired legs among his players, they will regroup and respond in a positive way.
"This is the final hurdle. The weekend is set up for what will be a very exciting finale," said Laws.
"Whatever happens, it has been a fantastic season for the whole club," he added.
The Bloomfields chief said that his young side had put the FA Vase semi-final heartbreak behind them and got in this position by losing once in the past 11 games.
Whatever happens in the league showdown, Laws expects his side to be prepared for the League Cup final – hoping to add to the Suffolk Premier Cup already in the trophy cabinet.
"We must not underestimate Gorleston. They have got to the final on merit and will be out to impress," said Laws.
Richard Wilkins was disappointed that his Bury Town FC team finished their Ryman League Division One North season on a losing note.
The Blues suffered a 4-1 away defeat at Aveley – Town needed a win and other results to go their way to keep their play-off bid alive.
As it was, the teams above them won and Bury faltered at the final hurdle.
"The game was poor from our point of view and emphasised the need to to strengthen our team to win the pressure games," said Wilkins.
Mildenhall Town FC completed their Ridgeons League Premier Division season with an away trip to Dereham Town tomorrow.
The Recreation Way side recorded a battling 2-2 draw against Wroxham on Tuesday to consolidate a fourth-place finish.
Walsham-le-Willows FC entertain Stanway Rovers while, in Division One, Stowmarket Town – boosted by a 5-1 midweek away win against Gt Yarmouth – host Halstead Town and Thetford Town travel to FC Clacton.
