Football: Midfield maestro trials for Town
Bury Town FC are on the brink of attracting their biggest name to Ram Meadow for many years.
Midfielder Kevin Horlock has been training with the Blues this week with a view to be included in the squad to face Ipswich Town FC at Ram Meadow on Wednesday (ko 7.45pm).
The former Northern Ireland international is relishing the chance to face his old club, having been with the Portman Road-based outfit from 2004-2006.
The 35-year-old joins former Histon defender Roscoe Hipperson and goalkeeper Marcus Garnham in making their Bury Town debuts on the night.
Their opposition is expected to be an Ipswich side containing first-team squad members as the Tractor Boys prepare to depart for a pre-season tour of Ireland at the end of the week.
Bury's director of football, Trevor Collins, has been involved in negotiations to bring the ex Manchester City player to Ram Meadow.
"At this stage, discussions for a permanent move to Bury are ongoing and Kevin is eager to play against his old club," he said.
Horlock has moved to Suffolk with his young family following a period in Yorkshire, where he played for Doncaster Rovers, Scunthorpe United and Mansfield Town.
It was his friendship with Crystal Palace striker James Scowcroft, who lives in Stanton, that sparked his interest in continuing his career with Bury Town.
"Kevin has yet to make a firm decision about his future, but has emphasised that he wants to continue to play," said Collins.
"He is eager to join an ambitious club which has a commitment to the youngsters in the game," he added.
Horlock started his career as a trainee with West Ham United in 1989 before moving to Swindon Town in Ausut 1992 where he spent a season in the Premiership.
He made 200 appearances in all competitions, scoring 26 goals in five seasons with the Robins before a move to Manchester City in January 1997 for a transfer fee reported as being between £1.25 million and £1.5 million.
In his seven-years at Maine Road, Horlock made 232 league and cup appearances, scoring 44 goals.
First capped in April 1995, Horlock went on to make 32 appearances for Northern Ireland before retiring from the international scene in 2003 for personal reasons.
Bury Town FC goalkeeper Dean Greygoose is running courses, for boys and girls aged six to 16-years-old, on Thursday, July 24 and 31, as well as August 7 and 14.
