Equestrian: Olympic dream
SHARON Hunt is less than three months away from fulfilling her Olympic dream.
The Great Saxham-based three-day eventer has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Beijing Games.
As a seven-year-old, Hunt made the first steps in her equestrian career making an impression in local competitions.
Since then, the 30-year-old has made steady progress up the equestrian ladder and rightly earned her recognition following an impressive fifth pace at the recent Badminton Horse Trials.
She hopes to build on that form in her first Olympics and aims to return home to Suffolk sporting at least a bronze medal.
"Being picked for my first Olympics really is a dream come true for me and I want to make the most of it by winning a medal," said Hunt.
She will be part of a star-studded GB team announced by the British Olympic Association on Friday.
The five member line-up includes reigning World eventing champion Zara Phillips, 2004 Athens Olympics silver medallists William Fox-Pitt and Mary King and fellow Olympic debutant Lucy Wiegersma.
Hunt will compete on her favourite horse Tankers Town after the duo have forged a sparkling relationship over the past decade.
"A good relationship between rider and horse is essential to success and I have been riding Tankers Town since he was four-years-old," said Hunt.
The three-day event pro-gramme – dress-age, show-jumping and cross-country – begins in Hong Kong on August 9 – a day after the opening ceremony.
The former Suffolk Hunt Pony Club member, will be competing in both team and individual events.
After suffering a broken collar bone at the start of the 2006 season, Hunt quickly made her mark on her return to top action later that year.
Representing Great Britain at the World Championships in Germany, she finished ninth.
"I am looking to build on my world championship experience of two years ago. With preparation, hard work and a bit of luck, I aim to pick up a medal," she added.
