Cricket: New opening partnership puts Hall in charge
MILDENHALL CC 1st X1 were looking to reverse their losing Two Counties Division One form of the past two weeks, and against lowly Maldon they achieved that.
Mildenhall's new opening partnership of Richard Cross and Karl Holmes put 100 on the board in under 20 overs.
This was broken when Cross was bowled for a fine 81. Mildenhall got to 150 and Holmes had just completed his half century when he offered an easy catch to point.
Luke Turner joined Jimmy Watson and the two added a further 33 before Turner (30) was dismissed. Frannie Bester joined Watson and they kept the runs flowing to reach 250.
Andy Squire and Adam Trett perished in the ensuing run chase and Mildenhall closed on 280-7.
For Maldon, Perera (23) and Elliott (18) were the only batsmen to show any resistance as Mildenhall bowled them out for 65. The last six wickets fell for nine runs. Bester rounded off a good performance by taking 5-17. Andy Youngs picked up 3-10.
Mildenhall 2nd XI travelled to Bury St Edmunds CC's Victory Ground for a Two Counties Division Three game.
Bury's middle-order of Estlea (36), Barker (35) and Stevenson (35) put the home side in with a chance of a big total at 163-5. However, a final run chase was denied by Steve Lankester and Rhys Desborough, both picking up two late wickets as Bury were bowled out for 194.
Lankester finished with 4-60 and the ever-improving Desborough took 4-33.
In reply, Mildenhall gave Chris Baugh (61) an opportunity to get some runs. Alex Lee (39) gave good support as Mildenhall passed 100 for the loss of one wicket.
Ziaf Kulasi quickly made 36 before one big shot too many left him bowled by Nunn. Ben Shepperson, Jamie Lee and Lankester made light of scoring the remainder as the visitors eased to a five-wicket victory.
The 3rd X1 travelled to Brightlingsea and batted first. The visitors looked comfortable on 122-4, but added only a further 22 runs.
Like Mildenhall, Brightlingsea looked set fair on 131-4. However, Tyrone Mills broke through in his second spell to reduce Brightlingsea to nine wickets down and runs short. Having produced the club performance of the weekend (11 overs, five maidens and taken 7-18), Mills had to withdraw from the attack because of a restriction of overs for his age group.
Skipper Mick Saunders turned to Lou Handy – making a seasonal debut. He clean bowled the Brightlingsea number 11 for 0, to secure a Mildenhall win by one run.
On Sunday, the 1st XI played away at Great Yeldham and, for the second day running, bowled out their opponents for a low score.
Great Yeldham could only manage 35 runs off the bat in a total of 49 all out. Wickets were shared, with Shepperson (4-13) being the pick of the bowling attack.
Mildenhall completed the chase in under six overs as Frannie Bester blasted an unbeaten 39.
