MILDENHALL CC 1st XI entertained Sudbury in Two Counties Division One, making one change from last week – Adam Trett returning from the USA.
Sudbury batted first and A.Younger blasted 30 out of the first 37, before attempting an extravagant straight drive off Phangabantu and being bowled.
This brought John Kent, the South African all-rounder, in to join Phillips. After four more runs had been added, James Holmes bowled Phillips for six.
Kent's classy batting was there for all to see but. However, with just 11 runs added, he was deceived by the pace of Holmes and edged a catch to wicketkeeper Karl Holmes.
Mildenhall ripped through the middle-order as Sudbury struggled at 72-7. The home side had a set back when James Holmes (4-29) broke down with a knee injury and Richard Cross damaged his back fielding.
Siegert (30) and Simmons (12) offered some resistance, before Sudbury were finally dismissed for 116.
Mildenhall sent in Karl Holmes as a makeshift opener in place of Cross and he was accompanied by Ziaf Kulasi.
There were moments of pure theatre as Sudbury's Kent delivered a barrage of short pitch balls and Kulsai countered with an array of hitting that culminated in him first striking the South African for four to be followed the next ball with a massive six.
Holmes (17) dug in to get Mildenhall to 49 before Kent had him caught. Kent struck again when he bowled Jimmy Watson for a duck. Frannie Bester had made nine when he tried to fend a short ball off Kent and was caught behind. The next over saw Kulasi (38) trapped lbw by Simmons and Mildenhall were 65-4.
This brought in Trett, with just one innings behind him this season, and together with Chris Baugh they fought back. Trett, always the more fluid of the pair, pushed the score passed 100. Baugh's resistance came to an end when he was caught and bowled by Woodson and it was left to Trett (36no) and Squire (6no) to get the last 10 runs that secured victory.
This win keeps Mildenhall in top spot and their six wins this season is as many as they achieved last season.
Mildenhall II travelled to East Bergholt in a Two Counties Division Three match and suffered their third successive defeat. On a positive note, Luke Turner, having been left out of the first team this week, helped himself to a century.
Mildenhall III had a home fixture against Maldon 2nd X1 in Division Six.
Mildenhall batted first and made 155 all out. Highlights were a 66-run partnership between Tony Cornell (35) and captain Mick Saunders (48). Hein Muller blasted a quick 29 while D. Richardson claimed 5-32 for the visitors.
Mick Saunders tried valiantly in switching his young Mildenhall bowling attack about.
