Cricket: Huggins leads attack, but support fails to seal win
BURY St Edmunds Cricket Club 1st XI faced four-times East Anglian Premier League champions Vauxhall Mallards at the Victory Ground on Saturday.
The visitors batted first and were largely dominated by good bowling as they reached 195-8 off 66 overs.
The only down side of the home side's performance was the number of extras conceded – 50 (writes DAVID BARKER).
Ben France, returning to the Suffolk club following a spell with Colchester, bowled well with figures of 18-5-35-3 and Simon Rees, who earlier in the week had been invited to Lord's to take part in a bowling nets with the England One Day squad, took the important wicket of Sri Lankan Test player De Saran for just two runs.
Mallards were reeling at 82-5, but Norfolk player Carl Amos batted well for 47no to leave the home side with 54 overs to score 196.
This league is more akin to a Minor Counties format in that 120 overs can be bowled, with a maximum of 66 in the first innings.
In reply, Tom Huggins continued his excellent form and was the mainstay of the reply. His innings included a mighty six off Bradshaw – the EAPL leading wicket taker – the ball clearing the houses on the south side of the ground.
Unfortunately, nobody else was able to match Huggins, who was out for 88 with the score on 119.
Wickets fell frequently and, in the end, Tom Rash and Hamish Bennett batted out for a well-fought draw as, on an excellent wicket, the ball had dominated the bat for most of the time.
Bury 2nd XI travelled to Felixstowe and posted 166 – Craig Rutterford scoring 65.
The home side have several players well- equipped for a higher standard and won comfortably.
A young Bury 3rd XI travelled to face an experienced Hadleigh side.
Mike Sturgeon (25) and Peter Thearle (29) put on 51 for the first wicket. Many years ago Dave Norman captained a Bury side on this venue and hit a six over the red brick wall. We are pleased to report both Sturg and Dobbo (46) repeated this feat.
Hadleigh won the game by six wickets, Javed being the pick of the Bury attack with figures of 14-3-46-3.
On Sunday, Bury fielded a strong team at home to Nowton.
Batting first, Bury put on 87 for the first wicket – Josh Davey scoring 51and Hugo Rynsard-Perry 50. Good support was given by Thearle (36) and Waters (23) while Chadwick bowled very well for Nowton to claim five wickets for 56.
The Bury bowling was spread around nine players and some good performances restricted the visitors to 153-8.
Cecil & Larter player of the week: Tom Huggins.
