FOUR weekend defeats have not made it a very good week at Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club.
However, there were positives from the defeats and these must be built on by the club.

1st XI skipper Justin Bishop captained Suffolk to victory against Hertfordshire on Sunday, with Simon Rees marking his debut by scoring the winning runs (writes DAVID BARKER).

I think Justin is the first-ever Bury St Edmunds player to captain the county. Martin Corke achieved this honour playing for the old Greene King club, but maybe someone knows different.

Teenager, Tom Robotham has been attending coaching this week at the invitation of Essex County Cricket.

This reflects well on his ability and the work from the coaches here in Suffolk.

Bury 1st XI travelled to Great Witchingham, who chose to play on a used track – no doubt to aid their spinners.

Bury won the toss and had difficulty scoring. Nick Lee dug in for 44, Mark Nunn again batted well for 31 and they were well supported by Tom Rash (26no).

The hosts won the game largely due to an opening stand of 99 from Norfolk openers Rogers and Spellman. Rash bowled well and Tom Huggins got two wickets.

The 2nd XI were well beaten by Woolpit for whom Bury old boy Merv Steward excelled.

Woolpit's 214 was a par score on a hot afternoon for bowlers. Young Marcus Price, called up the previous evening, showed great promise with four wickets.

The Bury batting never competed apart from Scott Stevenson, who applied himself well with 32no.

Kevin Dobson's 3rd XI were two players short on a day when a large number of players were unavailable.

Mildenhall 3rd XI piled on the runs with Reynolds looking a very promising prospect.

Bury batted okay, with 57 from Mike Sturgeon. With more players available we are looking to improve.

On Sunday, the Academy team were beaten by a strong Hadleigh team who scored 265.6.

Mark Nunn bowled well with young Adam Kizis who comes with a good cricketing pedigree looked another talented player.

In reply, Mark Nunn was outstanding with 118 no.

This superb performance rightly earned him the Cecil & Larter player of the week award.
