Cricket: Bester and Watson partnership not enough

MILDENHALL 1st XI travelled to Coggeshall hoping to renew their Two Counties league title challenge.
The visitors batted first and lost Karl Holmes (3), and Chris Baugh (38) before Luke Turner (31) helped move the score on to 79.

Frannie Bester (44) and Jimmy Watson (54) added a further 80 runs before Bester was bowled by S. Sykes and Mildenhall closed on 235.

James Holmes got two early wickets Coggeshall reached 23-3.

Opener R. Cross was resolute and with A. Stockton, Coggeshall rallied to 97 before the latter fell, caught and bowled by Bester for 43.

W. Blackwell made an aggressive 26, before being caught by Phanganbantu off Youngs.

J. Rees (50) joined Cross and they changed the game with a partnership of 94.

Mildenhall team captain Craig Andrews rotated his bowlers in a desperate bid to rescue the match, but it was to no avail as Coggeshall reached their target with four wickets to spare.


Mildenhall 2nd XI entertained Lakenheath in Two Counties Division Three.

Lakenheath batted first and made 236-5. Greg Palmer top scored with 77 before an unbeaten 48 from Danny Reynolds meant the visitors finished strongly.

In reply, Lou Handy (26) opened the batting with Alex Lee (76).

Steve Lankester contributed a fine 42, but the hosts fell behind the run rate and finished 31 runs adrift of their target.


Mildenhall 3rd XI travelled to Hadleigh in Two Counties Division Six and batted first.

Martin Taylor managed to break the shackles with 67. Paul Thurston (10) was the only other batsman to make double figures in a disappointing total of 132.

In defence of their score, Taylor led by example and dismissed both openers.

However, Hadleigh made light work of the rest of the Mildenhall attack as R. Smyth (65no) and T. Piddington (39) helped their side to a six-wicket win.


On Sunday, Mildenhall entertained Lakenheath in Hunts County Bats Division One.

Mildenhall batted first and Alex Lee (56) continued his fine form.

Hein Muller top scored with 66 and Lucky Phangabantu made 47 as the hosts closed on 232-5.

D. Weekes was the pick of the bowling attack for Lakenheath after claiming 4-50.

In reply, Mildenhall bowlers Adam White and Andy Youngs kept the run rate low while Mark Thurston showed a return to form with 2-34.

Robbie Horrex (46) top scored with the bat and brother Richard hit 33 as Lakenheath made 155-8.


The 2nd XI visited Gazeley for a friendly and escaped with a draw.

Captain Martin Kingdom made an unbeaten 105 in Gazeley's 205-7.

Steve Ready took 3-48, despite a couple of chances going down off his bowling.

Mildenhall were always off the pace in their chase, despite an opening half-century partnership by Andy Carter (22) and Renu VanOvermeire (29).

Jack Gould top scored with a flamboyant 32, as Mildenhall finished on 120-7.
