BURY ST EDMUNDS CC 1st XI ended their Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League season with a superb away win at Vauxhall Mallards.
Batting first, Tom Huggins and Ben France went cheaply and it was left to team captain Justin Bishop to score 46 at a run a ball (writes DAVID BARKER).

He was well-supported by Josh Davey (21) before Nick Lee and Chris Warn put on 144 for the four
th wicket. Lee ended four runs short of a deserved century and Warn made 79 – to take his total this season to 567 runs – as Bury posted 280.

In reply, the hosts were put under pressure by a bowling attack without the injured leading wicket-taker, Bishop.

Tom Rash removed the dangerous Amos and Rees piled in with two early wickets. Ben France, whose return to the club midway through the season has coincided with a run of six wins and three draws, took three wickets for 32 off 13 overs.

Huggins has emerged as a genuine all- round cricketer who, on Saturday, bowled 12 overs to take 4-45. During the season he has contributed 31 wickets and scored 537 runs.

This result left Bury in a fine second place, despite being hit by reduced sponsorship for the season.

Justin Bishop has had a terrific season as captain and has been well-supported by the senior players.

Bury are the only side without an overseas professional and during the season many of the club’s young players have been given the opportunity to experience this high level of cricket.

The 2nd X1 played Felixstowe needing to win to ensure their Two Counties Division Three status – the visitors also faced finishing in the bottom three.

Batting first on another superb wicket, Bury scored 222-9 following half centuries from Brian Barker and Craig Eastlea. Richard Pineo took four wickets including all the regular run scorers. However, Felixstowe had enlisted Ranga Dias – a Sri Lanka A International with the experience of 66 first-class matches – and his 96no made the difference as Felixstowe won the game.

Stuart Nunn has led the side extremely well and in recent weeks the performances have been good, with possible changes to the league next year we shall see how the situation resolves.

The same is true with the 3rd XI, where Kevin Dobson has skippered the side with great enthusiasm.

On Saturday, Chuck Berry was back and his excellent away swing bowling enabled Mike Sturgeon to take three catches. Hadleigh 2nd XI posted 251-5 and, in reply, Peter Thearle made an excellent 54 in a total of 129.

On Sunday, Simon Aldous captained the Academy. He and Adam Dinsmore each took three Cavendish wickets in a total of 181-8. In reply, Bury made a disappointing 98.

Cecil &Later players of the week: Nick Lee and Chris Warn.

On Sunday, Bury host the Suffolk Cup final – a 50 over game against local rivals Mildenhall (start 11am).

The Academy travel to Earl Stonham in Hunts County Bats League.
