West Suffolk Athletics Club travelled to Hemel Hempstead for their first match in the Southern Women's League on Saturday and, on Sunday, the whole club was represented in the Eastern Young Athletes League, held at St Ives.

Southern Women's League. In a tough match in Division One, West Suffolk finished in second place of the four competing clubs.

They were marginally ahead of Watford, who had finished above them in the league last season but some way behind the winners, Wycombe Phoenix.
Athlete-of-the-match for West Suffolk was Under-17 Sam Milner, who improved yet again on her club record in shot put and, in winning the discus, she smashed a longstanding club record by nearly three metres.

Throws of 11.16m and 36.05m projected Sam close to the top of the UK rankings in both events and will allow her a choice of disciplines for competition at the English Schools' Championships in July.

In shot, she was supported by Helen Waters, who won the B string.
Senior Tania Spurling was also close to her best as she won five individual events. High jump with 1.60m, long jump 5.63m, triple jump 11.76m, hurdles 15.5m and javelin 28.47m.

Tania was backed to good effect in javelin by Evie Castle, who won the B string with 19.73m.

On the track, Evie Castle took second in 80m hurdles and Abi Marriott claimed a surprise second in 300m hurdles – her first experience of the discipline. Helen Waters was second in 400m hurdles and third in 200m.

In the middle distance events, Abi Marriott and Emily Barker took second A and first B string in 800m, while Zara McLoone and Emily Wenman were fourth A and second B in 1500m.

Zara and Emily Barker were both second in the gruelling 3000 metres.
The other main track event saw Abi Marriott and Emily Wenman finish second and first (B) respectively in 400m.

Only a handful of U-15 girls were present. Emily Rogers' best event was long jump – 4.42m giving her second. She also ran well in the sprints, taking third in 100m and second B string in 200m.

In this race, the versatile Holly Archer was third in A string in a fine time of 28.0 seconds. Holly had already won the 800m by a full 11 seconds, and also willingly took on discus as B string to Beth Wade, where they both finished third.

Grace Waters took third in 1500m. Grace doubled up with Beth Wade in shot put and javelin. In shot, Gace was third in A string and Beth second in B string. In javelin, Grace was second as Beth won the B string.

Eastern Young Athletes' League. The match was dominated by Bedford and Peterborough – two big clubs with full squads in all age groups.

They finished eight points apart, Peterborough coming out on top, but a full 350 points ahead of third-placed West Suffolk, who took comfort from the fact that they were well ahead of Hunts AC, Biggleswade and Ryston/West Norfolk.

U-13 girl Chelsea Wade took part in three individual events and, with two wins and a second place, amassed 20 of her team's 58 points.

Chelsea was almost a second ahead in winning the hurdles, and won the shot put by over a metre, with 6.87m. Her long jump at 3.90m was just five centimetres behind the winner and, for a fine all-round performance, won West Suffolk Athlete of the Match.

Only three other U-13s were involved for the club. Sam Carson was second in the 1500m with a new personal best of 5 mins 37.5. She also took third in discus in her first attempt at the event.

Debbie and April Castle both scored well in the sprints, particularly in 200m where they were third and fourth respectively. Debbie also took third in B String long jump.

The U-15 girls were below strength, partly through illness and injury, but scored more points overall than any other West Suffolk squad
Although 47 points behind both Peterborough and Bedford, WSAC finished almost 40 points ahead of fourth place.

Emily Rogers continued her busy weekend, competing again in sprints and long jump. She was in good form in long jump, her best of 4.37m seeing her narrowly beaten into second place.

Hannah Castle was third in B string. Beth Wade had also been in action the day before and she continued her good work with a win in discus. Hannah was again third in B string.

Rachael Arbon and Abi Harrington took double second in A and B string hurdles, recording 14.1 and 14.8 secs against a strong head wind and in driving rain. They also doubled up in high jump where Rachael took second in A string and Abi first in B string.

Ieysha Brown took on shot put and javelin, gaining valuable points, particularly with second place in javelin.

Sam Milner was a little below form, but did enough to win in discus and shot put and take second in hammer.

Amy Donegan took first place in triple jump with 10.14m, 60cms ahead of second place while Ashlea Smith, competing in the event for the first time, was second in B string.

The duo combined well in 100m, with Ashlea third and Amy second in B. Amy also took second in A string 300 metres. Evie Castle took second in javelin and third in hurdles.

Kelly Barnard is batting hard to regain fitness and confidence following a long lay-off through illness, but she worked hard for fourth place in 800m and will benefit from the race.

Josh Palmer, Oli Harrington and Ross Forder made up the U-13 boys' team. Oli took second in high jump with 1.20m and was third in hurdles where Ross won the B string. Josh took on the two sprints, finishing fifth and sixth in 100 and 200m.

A hard-working U-15 boys' team of just four athletes held off Hunts AC to take third place in their section by one point. This was achieved mainly by a number of second-place finishes.

Jake Hughes and Callum Rutter each took second in 800m, with Jake narrowly failing to win the A string. They also took on 400m and shot put together. In shot, they were third A and second B, and in 400m third A and first B.
Lewis Manfield took third and fourth in 100m and 200m and was also fourth in long jump, while Alex Craninx continued his good form in high jump to take second with 1.55m, missing out on first only on count-back. Alex also took on hurdles, finishing third in a tight race where the first three were less than a half-second apart.

For the U-17s, Asa Burnett ran both 800m and 1500m finishing fourth and third.

Jack Chrisman took third in long jump with Asa finishing second in B string. Jack was also third in high jump where Matt Wake was second in B string.

In his third discipline, the triple jump, Jack took fourth with Matt taking maximum points for the B string win. Matt's best performance of the day was as runner-up in hurdles, recording the same time as the winner.

Under-20 Luke Allen represented Herts Phoenix in a National Junior League event at Ipswich.

He set a new pb in shot put with 11.97m to take first place and was fourth in both triple jump with 12.43m and discus with a throw of 27m.
