I REFER to recent readers’ letters regarding the Victory Ground.
Readers may possibly remember that, more than 20 years ago, the cricket club submitted plans for the Victory Ground to be developed with a hotel/conference complex on the Victory Close side of the field, plus an indoor bowling building with cricket spectator amenities on The Curlews side (even though this side of the ground is protected by a restrictive covenant), plus 300 car parking spaces with access from Sicklesmere Road.
The only green area remaining would border Nowton Road.
At that time, a public meeting was held resulting in the formation of a local residents’ association. I was privileged to act as chairman of a group of hard-working, dedicated residents, who campaigned tirelessly to prevent the horrific development and destruction of such an important sports amenity.
I am sure I speak on behalf of all involved with the local residents’ association at that time, in congratulating all those responsible for ensuring the future of the Victory Ground as an excellent sports centre.
