Young still bear the brunt of joblessness

January’s jobless figures in West Suffolk are up on December’s but down on January 2012.

For example, St Edmundsbury’s total for January was 1,617, which was 57 more than February but 63 less than 2012. But while the percentage of working age population on Job Seeker’s Allowance in most of the area is below the regional 3.1 per cent, in Breckland the 665 18- to 24-year-olds claiming is 0.5 per cent above the regional figure of 6.1 per cent.

That compares with Forest Heath where only 4.3 per cent are claiming.
