A MUSICAL loving Stowmarket boy is learning to pick a pocket or two in preparation for his debut role.

Martin Cole, eight, is busy rehearsing to perform in Ipswich Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of Oliver.

He will star in the famous opening scene set in a miserable Victorian workhouse as well as appearing as a member of Fagin’s young criminal gang.

Martin said: “Some of the performers are my age and some are quite a bit older.

”I’m not nervous about the performances, I’m really excited and I’m really enjoying learning how to pick pockets.”

During the show Martin will have the daunting task of stealing Fagin’s own pocket watch.

Preparations are already in full swing and Martin is busy rehearsing three times a week..

His mother, Jane Cole said: “Martin loves musicals and already knew most of the songs before his audition.

“He is always singing and dancing and would love to be famous.”

Martin’s ambitions to be a star of the stage will be well on there way when he performs at the Ipswich Regent from April 18-21.
