ASPIRING cooks battled it out to prove who had the best culinary skills during a MasterChef style competition.

Eighteen pupils, aged 11 to 12, at Ixworth Middle School cooked a three course meal for a panel of judges.

In teams of three, they rustled up a salad for starters, a salmon main course and fruit fool dessert.

The winning team consisted of Melissa Gazars, Megan Manfield and Laura Herod, who were recognised for their ‘attention to detail and precision’.

The judges included three members of staff as well as former policeman Grant Nunn, Mark Jepson, the communities manager for Havebury Housing and deputy mayor for St Edmundsbury Christopher Spicer.

The contest followed a visit to Theobalds Restaurant, where owner Simon Theobold gave pupils a masterclass in cooking the dishes.
