The West Suffolk Green Party is calling on Bury St Edmunds MP David Ruffley to stand down to spark a by-election.
In a statement, the party says that since Mr Ruffley announced his intention to quit at next year’s General Election ‘the people of Bury St Edmunds have effectively been unrepresented at Parliament’ and ‘been left without a democratic voice’.
It added: “The West Suffolk Green Party believe that this is unacceptable and that this democratic deficit must be addressed now.
“The people of Clacton and Rochester are being given the chance to elect a new MP following defections to UKIP – why not Bury St Edmunds?”
They called for Mr Ruffley to stand down now so Bury St Edmunds is ‘not left in this electoral limbo any longer’.
The Bury Free Press asked Mr Ruffley’s office for a statement addressing the matter and had not received one by the time of going to press.
